Some physical-AI startups sell robots to manufacturers. 1872 is taking a different route: owning the factory operation and using automation to produce the finished steel components itself.

What happened

1872 launched with a $15M seed round led through private funds advised by The O.H.I.O. Fund.

Founded by former SpaceX engineers, the company has opened a facility in Cincinnati that uses robotic welding and AI-driven automation to manufacture steel components for construction and infrastructure projects.

Rather than offering a general-purpose robot, 1872 is combining software, robotic cells and manufacturing operations around a specific industrial workflow.

Why it matters

Structural-steel fabrication faces skilled-labour shortages, variable project requirements and demanding quality standards. Welding is repetitive enough to automate but difficult because each component and joint can differ.

Operating its own production facility gives 1872 control over the environment and allows it to improve systems using real commercial work. It can generate revenue from manufactured products while accumulating the data needed to make the automation more capable.

The bigger picture

Vertical integration is emerging as a major physical-AI strategy. A startup may capture more value by building an automated service or factory than by selling hardware into slow-moving industrial procurement cycles.

The model is also capital intensive. 1872 must manage utilisation, material costs, project delivery and quality alongside robotics development. Its success will depend on whether automation creates a repeatable cost or speed advantage across varied customer orders.
